Prezi - From a "Mold Breaker" to a "Motion Sickness"

The semester is coming to an end , and so does this subject. When it first started , I thought that it would be a nonsense subject , something related with technology but I never expected it to be so applicable in my future days as a teacher.

We have done so many presentations until now during classes and what I noticed was that all the presentations were delivered through PowerPoint. Common nowadays , right ?

But why are we only using PowerPoint as the primary media in our presentations and not for example , Prezi.
So , my reflection today is about Prezi .
Why about Prezi ? Because I think that Prezi is definitely another stage when it comes to presentations. Of course , as after laughs tears always follow, so does advantages and disadvantages accompany Prezi too.

Firstly, using Prezi you definitely manage to break the mold. You are no longer using linear slides , but instead , you begin with blank canvas and can add and manipulate content anywhere on the page. Compared  to PowerPoint , Prezi is for free and provides access from any web-enabled computers and furthermore , it allows registration also through Facebook account.

Secondly , on using Prezi you also as a teacher ,manage to show your students that you are '' Up-to-date" with technology. It sounds simple I know , but imagine it like this : Working always with these modern tools , you give to your students a decent role model because they have seen a different
media in other classes and on watching you on innovation , they get motivated to do that by themselves. You somehow push them to changes , to changes for the best choices they have on their education.
Yet, the good things about this media are also accompanied by the 'dark' side of it. On using Prezi , you have to have an excellent internet  connection , since this kind of media actually doesn't work properly in an unequipped environment. Yeah , I  know I said earlier that being a web-based tool, but it does have its limitations.

Thirdly, though weird it may seem , people have been complaining about Prezi that it makes them feel dizy, so here's your biggest disadvantage : Prezi can cause you motion sickness . This happens mostrly by the misusage of animations and transitions that when you really think about it, moving from one corner of the screen to the other , it really makes you dizzy.

But it can all be avoided , don't constantly move from one corner of the presentation board to the other and make simpler moves of transitions and animations so that we can avoid the nauseating effect of playing around with Prezi.

Above all, Prezi still remains a very powerful tool of presentation and I am sure that on finding the right way to present things , a Prezi presentation may result in a huge success.

  1. I really agree with your first sentence. However,we have learned so many great things from this subject.Prezi is a good alternative to avoid those linear slides.I really liked the sentence when you have said that using tools such as Prezi and any other modern tool makes you up to date.Students really want and need a teacher that can adapt to changes of the time.Things change so the we also should learn to be flexible enough to deal with the changes of the time.Good job Eva!!

  4. I also relate to your first couple of sentences, but you may be surprised just like we did.

  5. I agree that Prezi is very useful but we have to take into consideration the fact that we live in Albania and most of the schools do not offer the opportunity to have access to the Internet and Prezi asks internet.Although is very interesting and makes the presentations look better!
