Technology and its influence of teacher's role .
Since the beginning of this semester , we have dealt with lots of topics , all coming in terms with a common term 'technology'. Apart from technology , we have also been discussing about the role of the teacher, how this role has changed with regard to the latest innovations in education and in technology.
We have been accustomed with this teacher, the traditional one , with a chalk on her/his hands and always pointing at the blackboard or just sitting down on her desk and explaining the lesson.
Past is past and nowadays, teacher's role has changed so much , though we still may have these experienced teachers who refuse to turn pages, but our main concern is on those who have turned pages.
But how has exactly technology influenced teacher's role ?
Well firstly, the role of a teacher has changed to that of a facilitator, providing students with more liberty in the classroom , and bringing this positive mode through the class and all that thanks to the usage of technology. Actually , technology has altered the role of teachers almost beyond all recognition , an alteration of such degree that we could also name it as Kafkaesque metamorphosis from traditional to modern, from flip-lid desks to IPad.
Secondly , as educators, we strive for students to engage in our subject with all they got and of course that for this they rely on the usage of technology. By giving students this opportunity, we as teachers also flip from our role to that of a facilitator , by providing students with the best media possible in order to get them achieve what is required by them. Furthermore, we intend on making them active learners, learners who develop a thirst for discovery and knowledge.
Thirdly , this immense usage of technology has somehow made teachers more courageous on challenging themselves in the way they teach. We all remember those teachers with paper exams on their hands, what about these new ones that make use of the latest technology , who embrace the power in students' pockets. Their power are those mobile phones - on allowing them full or part usage of these "weapons" on their activities while learning, such as :

- Filming a peer assessment
- Recording group discussions
- Uploading videos online
- all these as a way of engaging students in learning classrooms.
To sum up, this "new" role of teacher has not to do directly with roles , such as from traditional to modern , more than it has to do with the new approaches and open-mindedness teachers develop thanks to the immense usage of technology in our present time.
I do agree with your last paragraph that the new roles teachers have adopted have to do more with the new approaches they have embraced rather than with the roles themselves.I also think that technology has not only facilitated the learning process, but also had created some challenges for the teacher. One has to master not only the subject but also the different media elements in order to be called a teacher.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your post.It was clear well-organized and the topic was also very interesting.I also like the way you had organized the paragraphs.Good job!
ReplyDeleteWe are like all the time talking about technology, its benefits. I like the summarize that you gave us on technology and its influence of teacher's role. Thanks for sharing
ReplyDeleteYou have mentioned the teacher being a facilitator and that is the key word that describes the teachers nowadays. They want to be facilitators and they like making use of technology more and more in classrooms. However we must be aware that the difference between using technology righteously and making it a source running dry is constantly narrowing.
ReplyDeleteI think that u have exhausted this topic considerably a lot .The arguments are clear ,organized and also the examples helped me a lot to enrich my knowledge. Thanks !
ReplyDeleteAt the moment that I read your posts this theme makes me feel relieved. I think that there are still teachers that act with the traditional method and we know them pretty well. there is still a lot do be done to change their minds ;p First of all we should be the ones to make sure that technology is used to influence teaching in a new way. Actually I am waiting to see how you are going to deal with that during your presentation. Good job!
